Peoria, IL – Commuters in the Peoria area can expect smoother travel starting Wednesday, Oct. 8, as traffic returns to normal patterns along eastbound I-474 and southbound Illinois 6, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT).
The changes affect the ongoing construction zone just south of I-74, where traffic has been limited due to bridge reconstruction efforts. IDOT said the adjustment marks a key milestone in the multi-year project aimed at improving the I-474 bridge over Kickapoo Creek and the BNSF railroad.
According to IDOT, while normal traffic will resume in this area, additional work—including bridge painting and crossover construction—will continue through November. The westbound bridge span is expected to wrap up in 2026, signaling continued progress for one of Peoria’s most significant transportation projects.
Drivers are encouraged to stay alert for crews and lane changes as remaining work proceeds through the fall.
This project is part of Illinois’ ongoing infrastructure improvement plan, designed to enhance long-term safety and efficiency for regional traffic.
