Peoria, IL – A 23-year-old man was hospitalized early Friday morning after being struck multiple times in the head with a firearm during a violent encounter on Peoria’s west side, according to police.

The Peoria Police Department responded to an 8-round ShotSpotter alert around 3:46 a.m. in the 800 block of W. Hurlburt Street, officials said. While heading to the scene, officers saw a vehicle speeding toward a local hospital. Inside, they found the injured man, who suffered non-life-threatening head wounds.

According to police, a passenger told investigators that a group of males had approached their vehicle before one allegedly opened the door and struck the victim several times with a firearm. The driver then reversed and fled the area as the armed suspect fired multiple shots at the car.

Officers searched the area for the shooter but did not locate any suspects. The case remains under investigation.
