LINCOLN, Ill. – Strong storms are expected to sweep into west-central Illinois late tonight, bringing the potential for damaging winds, heavy rainfall, and localized flooding. The National Weather Service warns that the highest risk area will be along the Illinois River Valley, with the strongest storms expected after midnight and continuing into early Sunday morning.
According to the NWS office in Lincoln, repeated rounds of thunderstorms will be capable of producing wind gusts strong enough to knock down tree limbs and power lines. While the overall tornado risk remains low, forecasters note it is not zero, particularly in central Illinois communities such as Peoria, Havana, and Jacksonville. Residents are urged to keep multiple methods of receiving alerts active, especially overnight when storms may move in quickly.
Localized flooding could develop where heavy rain falls in short bursts, impacting travel on rural roads and low-lying areas. Drivers should avoid water-covered roadways and be prepared for sudden visibility drops during downpours.
The severe weather threat will diminish by early Sunday morning, though scattered showers may persist into the day.
