Peoria, IL – Peoria Police Chief Eric Echevarria confirmed Thursday that officers involved in the August 5, 2025 shooting of Brandon Lewis have been cleared of wrongdoing following a review by the Illinois State Police and Peoria County State’s Attorney Jodi Hoos.

According to Hoos’ official report, Lewis was armed with a knife when officers ordered him to drop it during a confrontation in the Glen Oak area. When he refused and began swinging the weapon, officers fired in what was deemed a justified use of deadly force.

Chief Echevarria said the investigation determined that officers acted “legally justified, reasonable, and necessary to protect the health and safety of citizens.” The officers will now return to full duty, pending an internal review by the department’s Office of Professional Standards.

The Peoria Police Department emphasized that an internal administrative review will still take place to ensure compliance with departmental policy.
