Peoria, IL – Man Arrested After Barricade and Chemical Munitions Deployment

Peoria, IL – A Peoria man was arrested following a standoff with police on the 1100 block of S. Blaine Street.

According to the Peoria Police Department, officers arrived around 1:00 p.m. in response to a report of trouble with a man. The suspect, identified as 52-year-old Matthew J. Burnside Jr., barricaded himself inside his residence, allegedly armed with a rifle. SWAT and negotiators were called to the scene to convince Burnside to surrender. When he refused, chemical munitions were deployed. Burnside was then taken into custody without further incident.

Police executed a search warrant and found a .22 rifle. Burnside faces multiple charges, including an IDOC Warrant for parole violation, unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, and resisting arrest. He is also wanted for domestic battery and criminal damage to property. He is currently held at Peoria County Jail.
