Peoria, IL – A Peoria man was arrested Tuesday afternoon after allegedly threatening animal protection employees with a knife during a welfare check, police said.
According to the Peoria Police Department, officers responded around 4:34 p.m. on September 16 to the 2600 block of W. Garden Street. The call involved Peoria County Animal Protection Services (PCAPS) employees who reported being threatened while investigating animal welfare conditions.
When officers arrived, they encountered 54-year-old James William Brazee, who allegedly exited a residence with a knife and threatened PCAPS personnel. Officers quickly detained him without incident, police said. A search revealed two pocketknives, and no injuries were reported.
Authorities said PCAPS had been dispatched to the home following a report of a malnourished dog. During the welfare check, five dogs and four puppies were discovered. All appeared malnourished, infested with fleas, and suffering from sores. The animals were taken into protective custody for treatment and care.
Brazee was arrested on charges of Aggravated Assault and nine counts of Animal Cruelty. He was transported to the Peoria County Jail.
