Peoria County, IL – A new scam targeting families of recently arrested individuals is prompting a public safety alert from local authorities.
According to the Peoria County Sheriff’s Office, a county resident reported Saturday night that they received an email and phone call from someone claiming to work with “Pre-Trial Services,” stating the victim’s fiancé could be released early from jail if a payment was made.
Investigators say the email came from “pretrialservices@atomicmail.io”, and the caller allegedly used official-sounding language and referenced personal information about the victim’s fiancé. The caller also reportedly claimed an affidavit needed to be completed and demanded $3,000 for the early release.
When the victim said they could not afford the amount, the scammer allegedly reduced the payment demand to $1,000 and instructed the victim to send the money using Cash App or Zelle, according to the sheriff’s office.
After sending the money, the victim became suspicious and contacted law enforcement.
Authorities emphasized that no legitimate law enforcement or court agency will ever demand payment for someone’s release from custody or negotiate payment amounts through phone calls, emails, or instant payment apps.
Officials also warned that scammers are becoming increasingly sophisticated, sometimes using real names, personal details, and fake legal documents to make their claims appear legitimate.
Residents who receive similar messages are urged not to send money, not to provide personal information, and to hang up immediately before contacting local law enforcement.
The sheriff’s office said it is actively documenting incidents and working to identify those responsible. Anyone who believes they have been targeted or victimized by a similar scam is encouraged to report it.
For young adults or students who may receive urgent calls about friends or partners in custody, officials stress verifying any claim directly with local law enforcement before sending money.
