Peoria County, IL – A construction worker was injured Tuesday morning after a delivery van crashed into an excavator in a Peoria County construction zone, according to the Peoria County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were dispatched to the 1200 block of South Maxwell Road around 10:48 a.m. after reports of a crash involving a delivery van and heavy machinery. Investigators said the van, driven by a man from Oak Park, Illinois, veered into the gravel shoulder before overcorrecting and crossing into a northbound lane closed for construction.

The van struck an excavator, ejecting the operator from the equipment. Deputies said the worker sustained a hand injury and a cut to the head but remained conscious and alert at the scene. He was transported by AMT to a local hospital for treatment.

The van driver was not injured. According to deputies, he was cited for Improper Lane Usage, Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid an Accident, and Injuring a Worker in a Construction Zone.

Authorities are reminding motorists to slow down and remain alert when traveling through work areas.
