Peoria, IL – A fast-moving winter system is expected to bring a swath of accumulating snow to central Illinois beginning around midday Monday, creating slick roads and slowed travel through the evening hours.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from noon Monday to 6 a.m. Tuesday for counties along and northwest of a line from Beardstown to Bloomington. This includes Knox, Stark, Peoria, Marshall, Woodford, Fulton, Tazewell, McLean, Schuyler, Mason, Logan, De Witt, Cass, and Menard counties.

Forecasters expect 2 to 4 inches of snow, with the heaviest bands likely developing during the afternoon and evening. Temperatures will hover near freezing, increasing the likelihood of slippery roads, especially on untreated surfaces, bridges, and rural routes.

Communities including Peoria, Bloomington-Normal, Galesburg, Canton, Pekin, Lincoln, Eureka, Clinton, Rushville, and Petersburg may experience reduced visibility and travel delays during the height of the storm. Drivers using I-74, I-55, U.S. 24, U.S. 136, and Illinois Route 9 should prepare for slower travel speeds and extra time during the Monday evening commute.

The weather service warns that hazardous conditions may persist into the early morning hours Tuesday, with light lingering snow and cold ground temperatures potentially extending slick spots.

Snow is expected to taper off from west to east before sunrise Tuesday.
