Penobscot, Maine – A single-vehicle crash on Front Ridge Road left one man dead Saturday evening.

According to the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department, the crash was reported around 7:46 p.m. on March 21 after a call to the Hancock Regional Communications Center.

Authorities said a black 2003 Volkswagen Jetta, operated by 35-year-old Zachary McKechnie of Bucksport, was traveling northwest toward Orland when it allegedly left the roadway, reentered the road, and rolled over before coming to a stop.

McKechnie was ejected from the vehicle during the crash and died from injuries sustained, officials said.

Investigators believe speed and alcohol were contributing factors, according to the sheriff’s office. The crash remains under active investigation.

Detective Dylan Hall is leading the investigation, assisted by Lieutenant Dakota Dupuis, Sergeant Travis Frost, Deputy Wyatt Lord, and Deputy Taylor Keeran. Emergency response also included the Blue Hill, Penobscot, and Orland fire departments.

Officials said the crash is being reconstructed by Sergeant Marcus Downes as part of the ongoing investigation.

Front Ridge Road is a local connector between Penobscot and Orland, and incidents in the area can affect evening travel for residents and commuters.
