Wellsboro, PA – Bands of lake-effect snow will continue to sweep across Tioga, Elk, and Cameron counties through late evening, bringing brief whiteouts, gusty winds, and slick roads on the final stretch of the Thanksgiving holiday travel period.
According to the National Weather Service State College office, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 1 a.m. Saturday. Additional accumulations up to one inch are expected, but rapidly shifting bands will cause sharp changes in visibility from Mansfield to St. Marys and Emporium. Gusts to 40 mph will push snow across rural stretches and open ridgelines.
According to PennDOT, bridges and overpasses along US-6, PA-120, and PA-287 may glaze quickly as temperatures fall into the 20s. Crews report scattered slick spots, especially where bursts of heavier snow coincide with stronger wind gusts. Drivers should slow down, maintain longer stopping distances, and be prepared for sudden drops in visibility. Travelers can monitor conditions via 511pa.
According to emergency managers in Elk and Tioga counties, quickly changing conditions may affect evening events and returns from extended holiday travel. Residents should charge phones, use extra caution on outdoor steps and driveways, and carry winter kits in vehicles. Blowing snow will remain most problematic in exposed farmland and along higher terrain west of Wellsboro.
Snow showers will diminish after midnight, with gradual improvement toward sunrise Saturday.
