Central Pennsylvania – Snow and gusty winds are expected to create hazardous travel conditions through early Saturday, as a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for parts of the region.

According to the National Weather Service in State College, the advisory continues until 7 a.m. Saturday for Cambria and Somerset counties, including the cities of Johnstown and Somerset.

Forecasters expect additional snowfall of 1 to 3 inches, with localized totals up to 5 inches, especially along higher elevations. Winds are forecast to gust as high as 50 mph, which may cause blowing snow and reduced visibility at times.

Road conditions are expected to become slick and hazardous, particularly during the Friday evening commute. Areas of blowing snow could sharply lower visibility, especially on open roadways and ridgetops.

The heaviest snowfall is expected along and west of U.S. Route 219, particularly on ridges and summits, where conditions may deteriorate more quickly than in nearby valleys.

In addition to travel concerns, gusty winds could bring down tree branches, potentially leading to localized disruptions. Drivers are urged to remain alert for sudden changes in road and visibility conditions.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation advises motorists to adjust speeds based on conditions and allow extra stopping distance. Up-to-date roadway and traffic information is available at www.511pa.com.

Snow showers and gusty winds are expected to gradually diminish by Saturday morning as the advisory expires, leading to improving travel conditions later in the day.
