Pittsburgh, PA – A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Pittsburgh and surrounding areas until 4 a.m. Friday as snowfall continues to create hazardous conditions for commuters.
The National Weather Service (NWS) reports that snow began early Thursday morning and is expected to persist throughout the day, impacting the evening commute. Total snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches are expected, with higher amounts possible in localized areas. Lower elevations are projected to see the snow taper off by 10 p.m. Thursday, while some areas could experience lingering snow showers into early Friday.
Drivers should prepare for slippery conditions on major routes like Interstate 376, Route 28, and Route 65. The NWS advises slowing down and keeping emergency kits on hand, as snow-covered roads may lead to travel delays. The Friday morning commute may still be affected by icy patches despite snow clearing overnight.
Friday’s forecast brings some relief, with mostly cloudy skies and a high near 34°F. Winds will be calm, and no additional snowfall is expected. However, conditions will shift again heading into the weekend. Saturday will see rain turning into snow by evening as temperatures drop, with highs near 40°F. Accumulations are expected to be minimal, but roads could become slick as precipitation freezes overnight.
Sunday will bring colder temperatures, with a high of just 25°F and scattered snow showers likely. By Sunday night, conditions will plunge further, with lows near 4°F. Monday, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, is forecast to be partly sunny but cold, with highs near 20°F.
Residents are urged to stay updated on changing weather conditions and to prepare for travel disruptions. Check weather.gov for the latest updates and road conditions.
