Columbia County, PA – A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for Columbia County and neighboring areas, with freezing rain expected to create hazardous road conditions tonight into Saturday morning. The advisory begins at 10 p.m. Friday and continues through 9 a.m. Saturday, impacting post-Christmas travel across the region.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), light ice accumulations could coat roads, bridges, and sidewalks, particularly in higher terrains. Travelers are urged to drive cautiously, reduce speed, and allow extra time for trips. Pedestrians should use extra care on icy walkways.
The NWS reports freezing rain will develop late Friday evening and persist overnight. A light glaze of ice is forecast, with temperatures hovering just below freezing during the peak risk hours of 2 a.m. to 8 a.m. Saturday. Counties under the advisory include Potter, Tioga, Columbia, and Schuylkill, where elevated surfaces may be especially treacherous.
Saturday morning travelers should be prepared for potential delays and detours, particularly on major routes like I-80 and Route 220. Crews will be treating roads, but conditions may remain slippery until temperatures rise mid-morning.
The weekend weather outlook indicates drier conditions by Saturday afternoon, with highs reaching the mid-30s. Sunday is expected to bring sunshine and highs near 40 degrees, offering relief from the icy conditions.
