Harrisburg, PA – Ice-coated roads are creating hazardous travel across central Pennsylvania right now, with up to 0.10 inches of ice making bridges and untreated highways slick through 1 p.m. Tuesday.

According to the National Weather Service in State College, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for more than 20 counties statewide. Freezing rain and periods of sleet will continue through the morning commute before changing to plain rain by early afternoon in most areas. Northern counties including Potter, Tioga, Sullivan and northern Lycoming remain under advisory until 4 p.m.

Major corridors including Interstates 80, 81, 83 and 99, along with the Pennsylvania Turnpike, could see icy overpasses and reduced traction. Cities impacted include Harrisburg, State College, Williamsport, Lancaster, York, Altoona, Johnstown, Bloomsburg and Pottsville. Ice totals up to one tenth of an inch are enough to create spinouts, especially on untreated secondary roads and rural routes.

PennDOT and the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission urge drivers to slow down, increase following distance and check 511PA for live traffic updates. Allow extra braking time and avoid non-essential travel until road crews catch up.

Temperatures are expected to rise above freezing by early afternoon from south to north, gradually improving conditions. Additional advisories could be issued if icing lingers into the evening commute in northern Pennsylvania.
