Morgantown, W.Va. – Snow will begin falling by 1 a.m. Sunday across northern West Virginia and western Pennsylvania, setting up slick roads ahead of the Monday morning commute and lingering into early Tuesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 1 a.m. Sunday until 1 a.m. Tuesday for Jefferson, Indiana, Westmoreland and Fayette counties in Pennsylvania, along with Marion and Monongalia counties in West Virginia. Forecasters expect total snow accumulations between 2 and 5 inches across the region.

Major corridors including Interstate 79 near Morgantown and Fairmont, U.S. Route 119 in Uniontown, and Route 22 near Murrysville and Monroeville could turn snow-covered before sunrise Sunday. Secondary and rural roads in Punxsutawney, Brookville, Greensburg, Latrobe and Indiana may become slick as snow gradually accumulates through Sunday and Monday.

Periods of light to moderate snow are expected to continue through Monday, directly affecting both the morning and evening commutes. While snowfall totals are lower than areas farther north, untreated surfaces and fluctuating temperatures could create icy patches.

Drivers should allow extra travel time, increase following distance and check local road conditions before leaving. The advisory remains in effect through 1 a.m. Tuesday, and additional updates may be issued if snowfall rates increase.
