State College, PA – A strong cold front sweeping through Pennsylvania on Saturday is creating hazardous travel conditions and an increased risk of fire spread across the state. Plunging temperatures, gusty winds, and intermittent snow showers are expected to impact various regions through the evening.

According to the National Weather Service, temperatures will drop into the 20s across the Alleghenies by midday, leading to the potential for slick roads. Northwest winds gusting over 35 mph are accelerating surface drying, but untreated roads may develop icy patches, particularly in the Laurel Highlands and West Central, Northwest, and North Central Mountains.

Meanwhile, in South Central Pennsylvania, an elevated fire risk is in effect for Adams, York, and Lancaster counties. The combination of gusty winds between 30-35 mph and low humidity levels (25-35%) could cause fires to spread quickly. Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning and check with local fire authorities for burn restrictions.

Snow showers are also impacting southwestern Pennsylvania, including Westmoreland and Indiana counties. Winds over 30 mph and reduced visibility may create hazardous travel conditions, especially along the Pennsylvania Turnpike between mile markers 59 and 72.

In Maryland and the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia, fire weather concerns persist through Saturday evening as humidity drops below 30% and winds gust between 35-40 mph. Authorities advise caution when handling open flames or conducting outdoor burns.

Travelers and residents are encouraged to exercise caution on the roads and remain aware of changing weather conditions.
