Harrisburg, Pa. – A much drier and cooler weekend is on tap for Pennsylvania and surrounding Middle Atlantic states after heavy rain caused rises on rivers and streams Thursday. Many areas saw over an inch of rain in the last 24 hours, but no river flooding is expected.

According to the National Weather Service Middle Atlantic River Forecast Center, much of the state will remain dry from Friday through Sunday, with only southern Virginia and parts of West Virginia still seeing spotty showers today. Rainfall over the past day lifted water levels on rivers like the Susquehanna and Potomac, but officials report all streams are staying within their banks.

Across Pennsylvania, drier air will settle in for the weekend, bringing a refreshing drop in humidity and temperatures. Motorists can expect better road conditions, while outdoor plans from Erie to Philadelphia should go on without weather interruptions. Residents in southern Maryland, central Virginia, and northern West Virginia may still see a brief shower, but the overall trend is much calmer.

Officials advise residents to use this window to clear storm drains and check basement sump pumps before the next potential rain event. Drier weather is expected to last through at least Monday, with no new flood watches anticipated at this time.

Warnings remain in effect for scattered showers in southern Virginia and West Virginia through tonight. Next update by Saturday morning.
