Philadelphia, PA – Pennsylvania is bracing for significant weather disruptions as the remnants of Tropical Storm Debby advance into the region. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued warnings for heavy rain and potential flash flooding, expected to intensify through Friday.
According to the NWS, main stem rivers in the region are anticipated to rise by the end of the week, with the possibility of river flooding extending into the weekend and early next week. The rainfall could be substantial enough to push water levels to dangerous heights, particularly if rainfall totals increase beyond current predictions.
The NWS also highlighted a marginal risk (1 out of 5) for severe storms, which could include tornadoes on Friday. Additionally, coastal areas should prepare for strong south or southeast winds, with gusts between 35-50 mph forecasted. A Gale Warning is in effect for Friday and Friday night along the New Jersey and Delaware coasts, with hazardous conditions expected in Atlantic Coastal Waters.
Residents near the New Jersey shore and Delaware beaches should be particularly cautious, as there is a moderate to high risk of dangerous rip currents through Friday. Elevated tide levels are expected, though major flooding is not anticipated.
Looking ahead to the weekend, conditions are expected to improve, with Saturday and Sunday bringing sunnier skies and cooler temperatures, offering relief from the storm’s intensity. However, the threat of minor tidal flooding could linger in the northeastern Chesapeake Bay on Friday evening.
