HARRISBURG, Pennsylvania – With Thanksgiving travel just weeks away, Pennsylvania officials are urging drivers to prepare vehicles now for the return of winter road conditions. From Pittsburgh to Harrisburg, motorists are being reminded that early maintenance and simple safety steps can prevent breakdowns and keep holiday travel running smoothly across the state.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation recommends that drivers inspect tires, check fluid levels, test batteries, and replace wipers before the first freeze. A winter emergency kit is also essential — including a blanket, flashlight, jumper cables, snacks, bottled water, and traction materials such as sand or kitty litter. “Preparedness makes all the difference once snow and ice arrive,” a PennDOT spokesperson said.

Travelers planning long routes on I-76, I-80, and I-81 should fill fuel tanks at least halfway and allow extra time for traffic. Officials also encourage checking the 511PA system for live road, plow, and closure updates. Drivers heading through mountain passes or rural areas are urged to dress warmly, pack extra clothing, and keep cell phones charged in case of delays.

PennDOT and emergency agencies emphasize that taking a few minutes to prepare before Thanksgiving travel can help prevent roadside emergencies and protect families during one of the state’s busiest travel periods. With colder weather approaching, readiness remains the safest route for every Pennsylvania driver.
