Philadelphia, Pa. – August 2025 closed out as one of the coolest and driest in decades across Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware, with temperatures running 2 to 5 degrees below normal and rainfall deficits topping 3 inches in some locations.
According to the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, Georgetown, Delaware recorded its second-coolest August on record, averaging 71.6°F, while Atlantic City Airport failed to reach 90° for the first time in an August since 2014. Philadelphia saw its mean temperature dip 2 degrees below average, while Trenton and Allentown trailed their long-term norms by more than 3 degrees.
The lack of rainfall was equally striking. Mount Pocono measured just 1.42 inches of rain for the month, more than 3 inches below average. Reading, Trenton, and Wilmington also landed in the top 20 driest Augusts on record. Officials warn that these deficits could set the stage for drought development if the dry pattern persists through September.
Travelers, farmers, and homeowners should stay alert for possible water restrictions in coming weeks. The NWS says outlooks remain dry, with no significant storms on the immediate horizon.
