Pennsylvania – Cold air hangs over western Pennsylvania this morning, frosting car roofs and stiffening breath along city streets. Pavement looks dry for now, but that will not last. A shifting pattern brings snow chances, falling temperatures, and air quality concerns back into focus for Pittsburgh.

Temperatures rise into the upper 40s this afternoon before slipping quickly after sunset. Light rain develops late, then transitions toward snow as colder air filters in. According to the National Weather Service, snow showers increase Wednesday with highs only reaching the mid-30s. Accumulations stay light, but timing matters for drivers.

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection has issued a Code Orange Air Quality Alert for Allegheny County. Ground-level ozone and fine particles may reach unhealthy levels for sensitive groups. Children, older adults, and those with asthma should limit outdoor exertion through the day.

Snow chances linger into Wednesday night as temperatures fall into the mid-20s. Melting during the day followed by freezing conditions at night raises flash-freeze concerns. Bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads may turn slick quickly after sunset. Plan extra time for evening travel, especially on I-376, Route 28, and neighborhood hills.

Thursday remains mostly cloudy and cold with highs near 31. Friday offers a brief break with partial sun and highs near the mid-30s. Another system approaches by the weekend, bringing rain chances Sunday with temperatures climbing into the low 40s.

Looking ahead, NOAA’s 6–10 day outlook signals a broader warming trend early next week. That thaw could ease winter’s grip, though fluctuating temperatures keep ice risks in play. Winter is loosening, but it is not finished yet.
