Pennsylvania – Damp pavement and a cool breeze greet central Pennsylvania this morning, but the calm won’t last. A powerful March system is building across the Midwest and pushing toward the Appalachians, bringing a sharp swing from spring warmth to late-season snow near State College.

According to the National Weather Service in State College, temperatures will surge to around 63°F Monday afternoon as a strong storm system moves into Pennsylvania. Showers will develop late morning, and thunderstorms could intensify after midday, bringing gusty winds and bursts of heavy rain across Centre County.

Drivers along Interstate 80, Interstate 99, and U.S. 322 should prepare for slick roads and reduced visibility during the afternoon commute. Some storms could turn strong, with wind gusts near 30 to 35 mph and brief downpours that pond water on roadways.

The bigger change arrives after the cold front sweeps through. Temperatures tumble quickly late Monday, allowing rain to transition into a rain-snow mix and then scattered snow showers overnight. While accumulations appear light, colder air and gusty winds could produce patchy blowing snow and sudden slick spots, especially across higher elevations surrounding State College.

Meteorologists also warn about flash-freeze potential early Tuesday if wet pavement refreezes as temperatures fall into the 20s. Bridges and untreated roads may become slippery before sunrise.

The chill lingers through midweek with highs only in the 30s Tuesday before gradual improvement later in the week. By Thursday, sunshine returns and temperatures rebound toward the mid-40s, hinting that spring is slowly gaining ground.

Keep umbrellas handy Monday and winter layers ready again by Tuesday morning. Weather swings like this are common in March across Pennsylvania.
