STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — A thin veil of fog hugs the valleys this morning, the ground still damp from a cool October night. The air feels calm but deceiving — a chilly, unsettled pattern is beginning to take hold across central Pennsylvania, bringing scattered rain chances now and the first real hint of frost later this week.

According to the National Weather Service in State College, light showers and patchy frost may trade places through midweek as the region moves deeper into fall. Today’s highs reach near 64°F before clouds thicken and scattered showers develop after 2 p.m. Light rain will linger into the evening, with the best chances along Route 322 and I-99.

Wednesday continues the unsettled trend with a few more scattered showers and highs around 53°F. West winds may gust up to 25 mph at times, making it feel brisk, especially in open areas and ridgelines. By late Thursday, drier air moves in behind the departing system, setting the stage for a clear, cold Friday morning.

Temperatures could dip to near freezing across rural valleys, where patchy frost is likely to form before sunrise. Sensitive vegetation should be covered or brought indoors by Thursday night.

The weekend looks dry and more comfortable, with highs in the mid-50s to near 60°F — ideal for fall yardwork, home maintenance, or early Halloween decorating. Still, the coming chill is a signal of the season’s next shift — from colorful fall breezes toward the first true touch of pre-winter cold.
