Harrisburg, Pa. – Strong thunderstorms could slam into central and northern Pennsylvania this afternoon, bringing dangerous winds, hail, and frequent lightning to more than 30 counties through 8 p.m. Saturday.

According to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect for 38 counties including Westmoreland, Luzerne, Blair, and Centre. The primary threats are damaging gusts up to 60 mph and isolated hail. Flash flooding is also possible in areas with repeated storms.

Cities like State College, Scranton, and Altoona could see rapid storm development, especially between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Residents should stay indoors during storms and secure outdoor furniture or equipment. PennDOT advises avoiding travel during high wind or low visibility periods, especially on I-80, I-81, and US-322.

This is the first widespread severe weather watch of the summer for much of interior Pennsylvania, and storms may be capable of downing trees or power lines. Stay weather-aware and monitor alerts via NOAA Weather Radio or local stations.

Additional watches or warnings may be issued into the evening as the storm system tracks eastward.
