State College, Pennsylvania – Rain taps steadily on pavement this morning, pooling along curbs and darkening campus walkways. The air feels mild for January, but winter signals are lining up fast behind today’s damp start.

According to the National Weather Service, periods of rain continue through the day, with temperatures climbing into the lower 50s. Gusty southwest winds may briefly reduce visibility, especially during heavier showers. Roads across Centre County remain wet, setting the stage for later problems once colder air arrives.

Rain tapers tonight, but moisture lingers. By Saturday, another round of rain develops, mixing with patchy fog during the afternoon. Travel along US-322, Route 26, and Route 45 could slow as visibility drops at times. Temperatures fall into the 30s Saturday night, allowing standing water to freeze on untreated surfaces.

Sunday brings a noticeable shift. Colder air settles in, and snow showers become possible, especially during the morning. Accumulations look light for now, but even brief snow could coat roads and sidewalks. Gusty winds may push flakes sideways, lowering visibility during short bursts.

This is the time of year when flash freezing catches drivers off guard. Melted snow and leftover rain can refreeze quickly after sunset. Bridges, shaded roads, and parking lots are most vulnerable. Plan extra time if heading out Sunday morning or Sunday night.

Conditions improve slightly Monday with sunshine, but winter stays in control. Cold nights persist, and additional snow chances return midweek.

For now, keep umbrellas handy today and winter gear ready for the weekend. Conditions may change quickly as temperatures drop.
