Pittsburgh, PA – The chill across western Pennsylvania tonight comes with a warning: slick roads could return fast as temperatures plunge below freezing. The National Weather Service in Pittsburgh has issued a Special Weather Statement for icy conditions as lingering moisture from Tuesday’s snowmelt begins to refreeze.
By early morning, black ice may coat untreated surfaces, particularly bridges, ramps, and shaded roadways. “Any wet spots could turn to ice and create hazardous travel conditions,” forecasters said. Drivers along I-79, I-376, and Route 28 should prepare for reduced traction and possible patchy ice through dawn.
Today remains cold and partly sunny with highs near 34°F. As night settles in, temperatures fall into the mid-20s while new snow chances return. Light accumulations of less than half an inch are possible, but the bigger hazard will be the flash freeze potential following sunset. Winds will stay light out of the southwest, adding a biting chill to already slick conditions.
Looking ahead, another weak disturbance brings scattered snow showers Friday morning before clearing skies Saturday. Temperatures remain locked in the low- to mid-30s through the weekend, marking the start of a true December chill.
