Pennsylvania – The gray skies over Pittsburgh hint at what’s ahead: a developing rain-to-snow system poised to sweep across western Pennsylvania late Sunday into early Monday. Temperatures will hover near freezing, setting the stage for slushy roads and slick bridges as colder air filters in behind a weak front.

Meteorologists with the National Weather Service Pittsburgh expect light rain by midday Sunday, gradually mixing with snow toward evening as temperatures dip into the low 30s. While accumulations look light — a dusting to perhaps half an inch on grassy surfaces — timing matters. Drivers heading out late Sunday or early Monday should watch for icy patches, especially along I-79, I-376, and the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

Monday turns brisk and bright, with highs struggling near 28°F and a chilly northwest breeze. The early week stays cold but mainly dry before another wet system arrives Wednesday, bringing rain and possible snow once again as highs reach the low 40s.

Long-range models now suggest colder, more active patterns from Dec. 11–17, aligning with classic Great Lakes clipper activity — the type that can deliver frequent flurries and travel slowdowns as holiday prep ramps up.

Plan extra time if traveling Sunday evening or early Monday, and check local road conditions before heading out. A few slick spots could linger into the morning commute as the region gets its first true taste of early-December winter weather.
