Philadelphia, PA – Skies across Pennsylvania could put on a rare show Monday night into early Tuesday as the Northern Lights may become visible far beyond their normal range. Residents in and around Philadelphia are urged to head outside late tonight if skies remain clear, with the best chance for viewing between midnight and 4 a.m.

According to NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center, a powerful solar eruption is sparking geomagnetic storm conditions that could push auroras as far south as Pennsylvania. Typically confined to higher latitudes, this storm may allow Philadelphia-area stargazers to catch faint aurora glows on the northern horizon. Clear skies overnight improve visibility, but light pollution near I-95 and urban centers may limit the view.

Drivers and late-night travelers along I-95 and the Pennsylvania Turnpike should use caution, as roadside distractions could increase with motorists stopping to catch the phenomenon. Officials recommend avoiding sudden stops or parking on highway shoulders. Safer viewing spots include state parks or rural fields away from city lights.

Daytime weather remains calm across the region. Tuesday will bring mostly sunny skies and highs near 80, marking a warm start to meteorological fall. Wednesday stays dry with sunshine before clouds build Thursday. Showers and possible thunderstorms arrive late Thursday night into Friday, dropping highs back into the upper 70s.

Aurora activity is expected to ease after Tuesday morning, but NOAA advises conditions could change quickly with additional solar eruptions. Residents should stay alert for further updates.
