Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – A period of light wintry weather could create slick travel conditions late Monday night into early Tuesday across eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and nearby portions of the region, with the greatest impacts expected north and west of Philadelphia.
According to the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, precipitation is expected to begin after midnight Monday night, starting mainly as snow before changing to freezing rain or a rain and snow mix in some areas Tuesday morning. The highest chance for 1 to 2 inches of snow is generally along and north of the Interstate 80 corridor, though those totals could extend as far south as the I-78 corridor.
The Poconos, far northwestern New Jersey, and the Lehigh Valley may see snow transition to freezing rain early Tuesday, resulting in a light glaze of ice on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses. Even minor icing could lead to slippery conditions during the morning commute.
Farther south, including the Philadelphia metro area, light snow accumulations under one inch are possible, with precipitation more likely to change to rain and limit impacts. Still, brief slick spots could develop before temperatures rise.
Precipitation is expected to taper off by early Tuesday afternoon. Drivers should plan for extra travel time, reduce speeds, and remain alert for changing road conditions. Additional advisories could be issued if icing becomes more widespread Tuesday morning.
