Scranton, Pennsylvania – Road conditions across northeast Pennsylvania could deteriorate quickly by the evening commute as freezing rain and drizzle arrive by 6 p.m., creating slick bridges and overpasses during the next several hours.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 6 p.m. until midnight for Lackawanna, Luzerne, Pike, Southern Wayne, and Wyoming counties. Light freezing rain or drizzle is expected to produce ice accumulations ranging from a thin glaze to a few hundredths of an inch, enough to make untreated surfaces hazardous.

The highest risk window runs from early evening through late tonight as light showers move into the region. Roads that appear wet may rapidly turn icy, especially on bridges, ramps, and elevated roadways in Scranton, Wilkes-Barre, Hazleton, Tunkhannock, Milford, and Honesdale. Sidewalks and parking lots may also become slippery within minutes of onset.

PennDOT and the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission urge drivers to reduce speeds, allow extra stopping distance, and avoid sudden braking. Motorists should check 511PA for real-time road conditions before traveling. Pedestrians are advised to use caution on steps and walkways.

Icing tapers toward midnight as surface temperatures slowly rise, though isolated slick spots could linger overnight. Advisories remain in effect this evening, and additional updates may be issued if freezing drizzle lasts longer than expected.
