Ligonier, Pennsylvania – Drivers in the Laurel Highlands and along the ridges of northern West Virginia could encounter icy bridges and overpasses before sunrise Wednesday as freezing drizzle develops around 3 a.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 3 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday for the higher elevations of Westmoreland, Fayette and Indiana counties in Pennsylvania, along with Preston, Tucker and eastern Monongalia counties in West Virginia. Snow totals will remain light, up to 1 inch, with a light glaze of ice possible. Wind gusts could reach 35 mph.

The greatest impact is expected during the Wednesday morning commute. Roads near Ligonier, Donegal, Ohiopyle and Armagh may become slick, especially on elevated surfaces. In West Virginia, areas including Terra Alta, Kingwood, Davis and Canaan Valley could see icy stretches on mountain roads and ridgelines.

Even minor ice accumulation can create hazardous travel conditions. Drivers should reduce speed, increase following distance and use caution on stairs and sidewalks.

Conditions should gradually improve after 3 p.m., though isolated slick spots may linger into the evening. Additional advisories could be issued if icing becomes more widespread than anticipated.
