Erie, Pennsylvania – Northwest Pennsylvania is facing a two-part winter threat, with light snow impacting travel early Thursday followed by a more dangerous winter storm expected to arrive late this weekend, potentially bringing heavy snow and bitter cold through Monday afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Cleveland, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through early Thursday morning for Erie and Crawford counties, where up to an additional inch of snow may create slick roads for the morning commute. Once this initial round exits, attention turns to a Winter Storm Watch that takes effect Saturday evening and continues through Monday afternoon.
Forecasters say the late-weekend system could produce snow accumulations exceeding 6 inches across northern and southern Erie County as well as Crawford County, including Erie, Edinboro, Meadville, Titusville, Corry, and Union City. The heaviest snowfall is expected on Sunday, when visibility may drop and untreated roads could quickly become snow-covered.
Travel conditions may deteriorate again during the Monday morning commute. Sub-zero wind chills are also expected Saturday night into Sunday morning and again Sunday night into Monday morning, increasing the risk for frostbite and vehicle issues.
PennDOT urges motorists to delay unnecessary travel and monitor road conditions through 511PA. Residents should prepare for prolonged winter impacts, as additional advisories or warnings may be issued as confidence in snowfall totals increases.
