Somerset, Pennsylvania – Travel across the higher elevations of western Pennsylvania and nearby West Virginia could turn dangerous starting Wednesday afternoon as a fast-moving winter storm spreads heavy snow, strong winds, and possible snow squalls across the region.

According to the National Weather Service in State College and Pittsburgh, Winter Storm Warnings are in effect from Wednesday afternoon through Thursday morning for Somerset County, the Laurel Highlands, and the ridges of southwest Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia. Snow totals of 3 to 6 inches are expected in Somerset County, with 6 to 8 inches likely along the western ridges. Wind gusts between 40 and 45 mph could lead to blowing snow and sharply reduced visibility.

In Somerset County, roads such as U.S. 219, Route 31, and the Pennsylvania Turnpike near the Laurel Highlands may become snow-covered quickly Wednesday evening. Across Westmoreland and Fayette counties, along with Preston and Tucker counties in West Virginia, bursts of snow squalls could create near-whiteout conditions overnight, especially along Interstate 70, Interstate 68, and higher mountain routes near Donegal, Ohiopyle, and Canaan Valley.

Emergency managers urge drivers to delay travel if possible and keep emergency supplies in vehicles. Wind chills are expected to drop below zero Thursday morning, increasing the risk for stranded motorists.

Snow tapers off Thursday morning, but lingering slick roads and blowing snow could keep travel hazardous into the early hours, with additional advisories possible if snow squalls intensify.
