Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – Drivers across northern and western Pennsylvania may encounter slick and icy road conditions early Tuesday as a low pressure system moves into the region, briefly allowing snow to change to freezing rain before warmer air arrives.

According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, precipitation will move in after midnight Monday night, starting as snow before quickly transitioning to rain for most locations. However, communities along the I-80 corridor and across the higher ridges have a greater chance of seeing a wintry mix that could produce light ice accumulations early Tuesday morning.

The greatest concern stretches across northern Pennsylvania, including areas near Interstate 80, where even a thin glaze of ice could create hazardous travel conditions on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses. Elevated terrain in western Pennsylvania may also see brief icing before temperatures rise enough for plain rain.

Farther south and west, including the Pittsburgh metro area, snow is expected to change to rain quickly with little to no ice accumulation anticipated. Even so, drivers should remain cautious overnight as conditions can vary sharply over short distances.

Motorists traveling late Monday night or early Tuesday should reduce speed, allow extra stopping distance, and watch for icy patches, especially in higher elevations. Winter Weather Advisories may be issued if confidence in ice impacts increases, and additional updates are expected as the system moves through the region early Tuesday.
