Johnstown, PA – Drivers in western Pennsylvania should prepare for potentially icy conditions overnight as freezing drizzle and light freezing rain develop across the higher elevations of Cambria and Somerset counties.

According to the National Weather Service in State College, rain will continue moving east through the night and gradually lighten. However, temperatures are hovering near the freezing mark in elevated areas, creating the possibility of patches of freezing drizzle or freezing rain. Even a thin glaze of ice may lead to slippery conditions, particularly on bridges, overpasses, and untreated secondary roads.

Forecasters warn that ridge-top areas may also experience poor visibility, especially where low clouds, drizzle, and fog combine. Areas such as the Laurel Highlands and the elevated terrain surrounding Johnstown and Somerset could see the most hazardous conditions through early Wednesday morning.

According to the NWS, even minor icing can create dangerous travel conditions, especially for early drivers, shift workers, and anyone traveling through mountain passes or higher back roads. While widespread significant icing is not expected, localized slick spots may form quickly and without warning.

Motorists are urged to slow down, use extra caution, and remain alert for changing road conditions overnight. Those traveling across U.S. 219, the Pennsylvania Turnpike near Somerset, and rural routes over ridge tops should allow extra time and reduce speed.

Temperatures are expected to edge upward later Wednesday morning, which will help improve conditions as precipitation exits the region.
