PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Western Pennsylvania wakes up to a sharp chill as a Freeze Watch and Frost Advisory remain in effect through Friday morning. The National Weather Service warns that freezing temperatures could damage unprotected plants and outdoor plumbing before a weekend warm-up takes hold.
According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, frost and sub-freezing air will spread across portions of western Pennsylvania, eastern Ohio, and northern West Virginia late tonight through early Friday. Temperatures may drop as low as 31°F in outlying valleys, with frost forming on exposed surfaces. Residents are urged to bring plants indoors and cover sensitive vegetation. Outdoor water lines and garden hoses should also be protected from freezing.
Despite the chilly start, the pattern shifts quickly. Sunshine and light winds return Friday afternoon, pushing highs into the mid-60s. Saturday will feel dramatically different, with highs near 76°F under partly sunny skies—perfect for leaf viewing, pumpkin patches, and outdoor events across Allegheny, Beaver, and Butler counties.
Rain chances increase late Saturday night, leading to a wetter and breezier Sunday. Showers and isolated thunderstorms could develop along I-79 and I-376, creating slick roads for drivers returning from weekend activities. By Monday, conditions dry out again as temperatures remain mild, signaling a short-lived break before more fall weather systems arrive midweek.
