Johnstown, Pa. – Heavy thunderstorms could bring dangerous flash flooding to parts of southwestern Pennsylvania through midnight Friday, with Cambria and Somerset counties at the highest risk.

According to the National Weather Service in State College, a Flood Watch is in effect until 12 a.m. Saturday as slow-moving storms produce rainfall rates of up to 3 inches per hour. The highest rainfall potential is west of Route 219, along the Laurel Ridge, where storms are expected to repeatedly track through the evening.

Emergency officials warn that excessive runoff may flood rivers, creeks, and low-lying roads, including frequent trouble spots like low-water crossings and underpasses in Johnstown and Somerset. Residents in flood-prone areas are urged to stay alert and prepare for potential evacuation orders. Drivers should avoid water-covered roads, especially after dark when hazards are harder to see.

This is the first major flood threat in the region since early spring and comes at a time when ground conditions are already saturated from recent storms.

Conditions will be closely monitored through the night. Additional flash flood warnings may be issued with little notice.
