State College, PA – Residents in Cambria and Somerset counties are being urged to prepare for dangerously low temperatures, with a Cold Weather Advisory and an Extreme Cold Warning in effect over the next several days.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the Cold Weather Advisory begins at 4 a.m. Monday and remains active until 7 p.m. the same day. Wind chills are expected to drop as low as 15 to 20 degrees below zero during this time. The Extreme Cold Warning will follow, taking effect at 7 p.m. Monday and continuing until noon Wednesday, with wind chills potentially plummeting to 25 degrees below zero.
The extreme conditions pose significant risks of frostbite and hypothermia for anyone exposed to the cold without proper precautions. Residents are advised to stay indoors as much as possible, dress in layers, and cover exposed skin when venturing outside.
Cambria and Somerset counties, including cities such as Johnstown and Somerset, are particularly at risk. These conditions mark some of the coldest temperatures of the season.
Officials recommend checking on vulnerable individuals, such as the elderly and those without access to reliable heating. Drivers should ensure their vehicles are winter-ready and carry emergency supplies.
