Pittsburgh, Pa. – Drivers across western and central Pennsylvania, eastern Ohio, and parts of West Virginia are waking up to dangerous travel conditions this morning as dense fog blankets the region, cutting visibility to a quarter mile or less.
According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh and State College, Dense Fog Advisories are in effect until 9 a.m. EDT Wednesday for areas including Pittsburgh, Altoona, Zanesville, and Wheeling. The advisory warns of sharply reduced visibility impacting both highways and rural roads during the morning commute.
In Ohio, the fog stretches from Tuscarawas and Carroll counties to Belmont and Muskingum. In Pennsylvania, Mercer, Butler, Clearfield, and Lycoming counties are among those affected. Communities like New Castle, Punxsutawney, and Bedford may experience significant delays. West Virginia’s northern panhandle, including Wheeling and Weirton, is also impacted.
Motorists are urged to slow down, use low-beam headlights, and allow extra space between vehicles. Visibility can change rapidly, especially in valleys and near rivers like the Allegheny and Ohio.
Conditions are expected to improve by mid-morning as the fog lifts. However, drivers should remain alert for patchy fog through the early part of the day. Additional advisories may be issued if conditions persist.
