STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – Central Pennsylvania drivers faced dangerous visibility early Wednesday as dense fog lingered across highways, including stretches of U.S. Route 322. Reduced visibility combined with wet roads slowed commuters, and more rounds of showers will keep conditions unsettled through Friday.

According to the National Weather Service in State College, fog advisories remain in effect until mid-morning Wednesday, followed by widespread showers. A stronger push of thunderstorms is likely Thursday afternoon into the evening, raising concerns for slick roads and possible ponding in low-lying areas.

Rain chances hover near 90% through Thursday night, with a brief lull expected Friday. That pause won’t last long: additional showers could return by the weekend, keeping skies unsettled. Cooler mornings are approaching but no frost risk appears likely until early October.

Travelers across Centre County should allow extra time during commutes, especially along I-99 and Route 322, where fog tends to settle in valley stretches. Keep headlights on, increase following distance, and avoid speeding in reduced visibility.

Fall-like weather briefly takes hold Friday with partly sunny skies and highs in the upper 70s. However, unsettled patterns return this weekend with scattered showers and clouds. Localized flooding isn’t a major concern, but repeated rain could cause drainage backups in some neighborhoods.

More stable conditions appear early next week with highs near the upper 70s and drier air. Still, PennDOT warns motorists that slick spots may develop quickly with passing showers through Saturday.
