Harrisburg, Pennsylvania – A prolonged stretch of arctic cold is expected to grip Pennsylvania late this week, bringing near-zero overnight temperatures, dangerous wind chills, and a chance of snow that could complicate travel across the state. Overnight lows are expected to fall to around 1 degree in many areas, with daytime highs struggling through the teens as the cold settles in through early next week.

According to the National Weather Service, the coldest period is expected from Saturday through Tuesday as a polar air mass spreads across the Mid-Atlantic. Gusty northwest winds will push wind chill values down to between 15 and 25 degrees below zero at times, especially overnight and during the early morning hours. Scattered snow showers may develop, particularly across western and northern portions of the state.

Central and northern Pennsylvania, including Harrisburg, State College, and Williamsport, are expected to see the coldest conditions, while western cities such as Pittsburgh and Erie could also contend with lake-enhanced snow showers. Snow-covered and icy stretches are possible on Interstate 80, Interstate 81, Interstate 76, and secondary roadways, especially during nighttime travel.

State emergency management officials urge residents to limit time outdoors, dress in warm layers, and prepare homes for extreme cold by protecting exposed pipes. Drivers are advised to carry winter survival kits and allow extra travel time during snow showers.

The deep freeze is expected to persist through Tuesday, with additional advisories or warnings possible as conditions develop.
