Pennsylvania – Breath fogs instantly in Pittsburgh this morning as bitter cold settles across the region, making even short trips outside feel punishing. Wind cuts through layers, flags snap sharply, and exposed skin stings within minutes. This MLK Day starts with winter at full force.

According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, a Cold Weather Advisory is in effect from this evening through Tuesday midday. Wind chills may plunge as low as 17 degrees below zero across western Pennsylvania, eastern Ohio, and northern West Virginia. Actual air temperatures remain in the teens and single digits, but gusty winds dramatically worsen conditions.

Light snow is possible at times today, adding minor accumulation but increasing slick spots on untreated roads. Bridges, overpasses, and elevated stretches of I-376, I-79, and Route 28 may turn icy, especially during early travel hours. Visibility could briefly drop during passing snow showers, though impacts stay localized.

Tonight brings the coldest stretch. Temperatures fall into the single digits, and wind chills drop well below zero. That combination raises concerns for frostbite and hypothermia if precautions are not taken. Residents are urged to limit time outdoors, wear insulated layers, hats, and gloves, and ensure pets have adequate shelter.

By Tuesday, sunshine returns, but the cold lingers. Highs struggle near 20, and wind chills remain harsh through the morning. Wednesday marks a turning point. Temperatures rebound into the upper 30s, introducing a chance for light snow or a rain-snow mix later in the day. That warming trend also increases the risk for flash freezing after sunset if moisture lingers.

Looking ahead, NOAA’s 6–10 day outlook keeps colder-than-normal air anchored across the eastern U.S., with precipitation chances rising late week. Additional winter weather alerts may follow as systems line up.
