Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – Damaging winds could strike parts of western Pennsylvania Tuesday afternoon, especially along and north of I-80, as isolated storms develop in drier, cooler air.

According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, a Level 1 “Marginal Risk” for severe weather is in effect between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Tuesday. While confidence remains low, forecasters warn that any storms that do form could unleash microbursts—compact but intense wind events capable of downing trees and damaging power lines.

Cities like Oil City, Clarion, and Mercer are under the greatest risk, with storms possibly forming as cooler air from the Midwest slides into the region. When dry air meets falling rain, rapid cooling can send dense air crashing to the ground, generating localized wind bursts just as destructive as small tornadoes.

Travelers along I-80 should use caution this afternoon, especially during sudden wind gusts. Residents in affected counties are urged to secure loose outdoor items and stay alert for any watches or warnings.

This threat should diminish after sunset, but updates will continue throughout the day via the National Weather Service.
