Harrisburg, Pennsylvania – Families across the Susquehanna Valley should limit outdoor activity Wednesday as air pollution levels are expected to climb into unhealthy ranges for sensitive groups.

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, a Code Orange Air Quality Alert is in effect Wednesday for Dauphin, Lebanon, Cumberland, York and Lancaster counties. Under a Code Orange designation, concentrations of ground-level ozone or fine particles may reach levels considered unhealthy for children, older adults and people with asthma, heart disease or other lung conditions.

Communities including Harrisburg, Lebanon, York and Lancaster could see elevated pollution levels during peak afternoon hours. Health officials recommend that sensitive individuals avoid prolonged or strenuous outdoor exercise, especially during the warmest part of the day when ozone concentrations tend to be highest.

Schools and athletic programs may consider adjusting outdoor practices, and residents are encouraged to reduce vehicle use where possible to limit emissions.

Air quality conditions will be monitored throughout Wednesday, and additional alerts could be issued if pollution levels remain elevated. Residents can check AirNow.gov for real-time updates.
