Philadelphia, PA – A dangerous combination of scorching temperatures and poor air quality is gripping the Philadelphia region through 8 p.m. Wednesday, prompting warnings for heat-related illness and pollution-sensitive groups.

According to the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, an Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect for Philadelphia and surrounding counties, with heat index values peaking near 110°F Monday and Tuesday. A Code Orange Air Quality Alert is also active Monday for the Delaware Valley, where ozone levels may pose health risks to children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory or heart conditions.

The warning covers major population centers across southeast Pennsylvania, including Allentown, Norristown, Reading, West Chester, and Bethlehem. Overnight lows in the upper 70s to low 80s will offer little relief, and high humidity will intensify heat stress.

Officials urge residents to stay indoors with air conditioning, hydrate frequently, and check on vulnerable neighbors. Avoid outdoor work and do not leave pets or children in vehicles under any circumstances. Those without access to cooling can dial 211 for shelter information.

This prolonged heat event is the most intense of the summer so far. More air quality alerts may follow if stagnant, humid air persists.
