PITTSBURGH – A widespread winter storm is set to bring accumulating snow and slippery roads across western Pennsylvania and the northern panhandle of West Virginia late Monday night through Tuesday morning, making for a difficult morning commute across the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for the entire area, with 3 to 5 inches of snow expected, locally lower in the Mon Valley and higher toward the ridges. The heaviest snow rates are forecast between 4 a.m. and 8 a.m. Tuesday, when visibility could drop below one-half mile at times.

A brief period of freezing rain or sleet may mix in around Morgantown and Uniontown, where uncertainty remains in total snow amounts. Lighter snow will linger into late morning before tapering by midday Tuesday.

Forecasters warn that untreated roads, especially on hills and bridges, will become slick overnight. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation advises slowing down, allowing extra time, and checking 511PA.com before traveling. In West Virginia, motorists can monitor wv511.org for conditions.

By Tuesday afternoon, roads should begin improving as temperatures edge just above freezing. However, refreezing may occur Tuesday night as cold air returns.
