Indiana County, PA – A missing pilot from Altoona has been found deceased in Indiana County after search crews located his crashed ultralight aircraft Tuesday morning.
According to Pennsylvania State Police, David Edward Wittmer, 75, was last seen on October 1 after taking off from a field near Church Street in Young Township around 6:00 p.m. He was reported missing when he failed to return.
At approximately 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, members of the State Police Aviation Patrol Unit located Wittmer’s ultralight in a cornfield along Coal Run Road, less than one mile from where he had taken off. First responders confirmed Wittmer was deceased at the scene. His next-of-kin has been notified.
Investigators say no foul play is suspected. Troopers are treating the incident as an accidental death, with assistance from the Indiana County Coroner’s Office.
Authorities thanked the public for sharing information during the search, which involved local fire crews, PSP Troop A, and aviation patrol units.
