Binghamton, NY – Eight years ago, an EF-2 tornado tore through Luzerne and Lackawanna counties in Pennsylvania, leaving a trail of destruction. The tornado touched down in Plains Township on February 25, 2017, and traveled 12.8 miles to Moosic.

According to the National Weather Service, the tornado had winds reaching 120 mph and a width of 500 yards. It caused significant damage, including tearing apart two homes and severely damaging a metal horse barn. Trees fell, blocking roads, and power lines came down, leaving many without electricity.

The hardest-hit areas included Bald Mountain Road, Suscon, Chapel, and Baker Roads in Pittston Township. Glendale Road and Spring Brook Township also saw extensive damage. The tornado knocked down over a thousand trees, especially around Lake Scranton.

Despite the destruction, no injuries or fatalities were reported. The storm lifted near Moosic after nearly 15 minutes on the ground. Today, the event serves as a reminder of the power of severe weather in Pennsylvania.
