Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – Heavy rain and smoggy air could clash Monday across Western Pennsylvania, creating a messy and muggy start to the week.

According to the National Weather Service, a Code Orange Air Quality Alert remains in effect Sunday night into Monday for Allegheny, Butler, Westmoreland, and surrounding counties. The Pennsylvania DEP warns that ozone levels will remain unhealthy for sensitive groups, including children, the elderly, and anyone with asthma or lung conditions.

A high of 88°F is expected Monday, with thunderstorms likely to develop between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., especially along major roadways like I-376 and Route 28. Rain chances hit 90% by late afternoon, with new rainfall totals approaching a half inch in areas near Greensburg and Washington. Winds may gust up to 15 mph during storm activity. Visibility may also be reduced due to haze.

If you’re heading outside, especially in the late afternoon, avoid strenuous activity and consider delaying errands. Evening storms could linger through midnight with patchy fog forming afterward.

Looking Ahead:

  • Tuesday brings more rain and storms (70% chance) with a high near 85°F.
  • Wednesday and Thursday look drier, sunny, and warmer (mid-to-upper 80s).
  • Friday (4th of July): Mostly sunny with highs near 92°F, ideal for fireworks, though air quality may worsen again.
